Disappointed in design and quality
October 20, 2014
I own a Recaro ProSport and absolutely love it, and was very excited that the Performance Coupe was released just in time for my new baby. However, upon receiving the seat I was disappointed in the overall quality of the seat. The cover pulls forward off the shell of the seat, which is mildly annoying. I do really like the HALO system and the straps adjust easily, but the release button to loosen the straps is recessed deep in the seat, and is a bit tricky to access. Installing it in my car revealed a few issues: this seat takes up a huge amount of room, because of the way it is designed to fit into the base. It looks great for providing lots of legroom for bigger babies, but it means that the seat isn't practical for parents with small vehicles and/or tall drivers. Next, getting the proper angle in my 2014 Malibu was impossible. The adjustable recline foot did not extend far enough to achieve the proper angle according to the bubble level system. There is an additional recline foot for this exact scenario, but it does not lock into position in any way. Due to the way my seats are shaped, extending this additional recline foot and applying pressure to install caused the foot to collapse and fold back under. I was a certified child passenger safety technician for six years, and am very familiar with installing car seats. I also took this seat to a seat check event to enlist the help of other CPSTs in the hope that I was missing something. A team of techs, including three instructors, all agreed after over an hour with the seat that it is incompatible in my vehicle with the base, and that the quick flip recline is a design flaw. Overall, despite being a Recaro fan, I'm disappointed in the quality of this seat and don't feel it corresponds either with the Recaro name or the price tag.
