Gave this to my 3 year old granddaughter and she wouldn't leave it alone!

I bought this puzzle for my granddaughter for Christmas and she absolutely loves it.. From an adult point of view, this is an educational toy that she loves to play with and I am very happy about this..

My son received it as a birthday gift. It worked good at first, but soon the noises weren't working properly. Sometimes only some of them would work. Other times, none of the noises would work. I tried changing the batteries, but it didn't help.

This was a gift for my 21 month old grandson. He loves it!

My daughter loves this puzzle. Bought on vacation at a gift shop. Unfortunately all work for the cat.

I purchased this last week. The animal sounds are not consistent. I changed the batteries twice. Adorable concept but very disappointed.

My grand daughter loves trying to get the pieces back into their spot in order to hear the animal sounds. Very cute!

My son loved listening to the animals and taking the pieces off the puzzle. At least he did until it stopped working after 1 week. We exchanged that puzzle for another, and that one stopped working not even after 5 hours! Batteries were tested and tempered with to insure it wasn't a simple fix. I'm incredibly disappointed by the technology of the puzzles. 2 strikes is enough, I won't be buying sound puzzles by Melissa and Doug any time soon. Very sad.

My one-year-old grandson loves to place the pieces so he can hear and mimic the sounds, but there is a lot of frustration because it doesn't always work. This thing has very erratic behavior. Place a piece, no sound. Repeat, no sound. Repeat, appropriate sound. Dump them all out, place all pieces - no sound from any. Try that again - all works fine. Sometimes it all works fine right from the start. And yes, the batteries are fresh! Maybe we just go a defective one, but it is fun for him when it works right.

This was my son's very first Melissa & Doug product and we still put it together at least once a day! He loves the animal noises and it has helped him differentiate between the animals and the sounds they make. Great Product! Would highly recommend to others!

My son got this as a gift. He loves puzzles and animals. I put batteries in and only two of animals make noise when placed. We usually love Melissa and Doug toys, but this one not so much. I am extremely disappointed.

I'm so disappointed! Such a costly investment and it works only when it feels like working. I purchased two sound puzzles and they're both the same - temperamental! The cat sounds AWFUL and so fake! The other animal sounds are almost true to life, but the cat is fake! The dog and cat stopped working, then 2 minutes later all the animals stopped working. Then i took it into the other room and it worked, but not all the sounds. The batteries are brand new and Duracell (so not cheap dollar store batteries) and its impossible to get to work when i want it to. I'd recommend it only if it worked...

This goes off at all hours of the day and night without being touched. It also goes off when I turn on or shut off lights which is very creepy. The sounds are not realistic compared to other similar toys we have. I have removed the batteries and am hoping I don't hear any animal noises tonight.

I really like the puzzle, but my sounds are not working. :( Disappointed, and its brand new.

I've tried several sets of new batteries and this puzzle just doesn't work. I think I am more disappointed than my son.

Sometimes the animals make sounds when we put the pieces into the puzzle, but more often than not, they do not. It's still a cute puzzle, just disappointing. I expected more out of the quality.

This product has the most terrible design I have ever seen in my many years as an engineer. The sounds are light activated. When the puzzle piece is placed over the sensor the sound is activated. Guess what happens when the sun sets and a piece is not in place? Random sounds at random times in the kids room. Do not buy unless every night you enjoy checking the status of every puzzle piece before sunset.

We received this and another animal sound puzzle as a gift. My daughter loves animals and imitating their sounds. Both of these puzzles were extremely disappointing. The animal sounds all sound the same and sound like blurry, screeching sounds. I normally love the quality of M&D toys but this is not something I would recommend.

Sounds are poor and the puzzle triggers by any light change in the room. It uses photo electric sensors from the 1980's which were unreliable for any electronics so they were dropped in most design applications.

We bought this puzzle this weekend, and I don't know how, but every time we turn off the lamp in the living room (which is the room's only source of light, so it always has to be on), the puzzle makes sound. I think it's the zebras. It is very freaky. We keep the puzzle and its pieces completely separate from each other at night when we aren't using the puzzle (puzzle on the table, pieces on the floor or chair) and every single day and night when we turn the lamp off, the puzzle makes noise at us. It has frightened us on more than one occasion. Now I know to expect it. How is this happening? I would like to return this puzzle to the store if they will accept it and get a non-sound puzzle. Also, the puzzle makes sound when you bring the pieces close to their spots, they don't even have to be inside the puzzle exactly. My daughter cannot get the pieces in since she is only 19 months old, but she makes the puzzle roar and squwak plenty while moving the pieces around on the board near to where they are supposed to fit.

we like animals and my child played just with them without using sounds which is really terrible.

The puzzle is fun and my son loves all the animal noises but...when you hold the Elephant over the spot for the Lion (or any other animal) it makes the Lion sound (or the parrot or alligator or monkey etc). So it is not really teaching the kids proper sounds and it makes nosies even when the pieces are not back in the "correct" places.

I was traveling to visit my granddaughter in another state. We stopped at a mall on the way and I saw this puzzle. Over the years I have purchased MANY Melissa and Doug products so I had no concerns about the quality. The puzzle was shrink wrapped in plastic so I did not try it out in the store ... but, why would one need to try out a Melissa & Doug product? I paid cash, and the following day when we arrived at my grandchild's house, I was excited to give her the new puzzle. Sadly, it did not work. We checked/changed batteries ... I mean there were four adults in the room with many degrees ... it did not work. I lost the receipt ... but, I wouldn't be back in the city where i purchased it anyway. I phoned the company (Melissa & Doug) and told the story. They NEVER responded. I was willing to discuss ways to return the puzzle, but, with no reply from M & D, the puzzle just became another wood puzzle. I was VERY DISAPPOINTED in Melissa and Doug.

animal sounds are unreliable, may or may not work. Could have been defective due to damage as it was purchased at a "discount". Good puzzle as most wooden puzzles are.

half the time the sounds don't work. Other times half of it works / the wrong sounds come out. Just occasionally... success!!

My 2 year old daughter loves this puzzle. She knows the names of all the animals on the puzzle. I plan to buy more of these puzzles for her. The only con is that my daughter chews on some of the pieces, but that is an issue with my child, not the puzzle, hence the 5 star rating :).

I use this as a tool in my practice. The children love it!!!

It's very educational with teaching a child what noises each animal makes

my kids love putting the puzzle tog. but every so often the puzzle sounds wouldn't go off. the batteries are new batteries but i have to shake up the puzzle to get the sound going (which sometimes works and sometimes doesn't) the sound doesn't only work if the right piece was put in. the sounds go off when any movement is detected over the "hole".

Great product. My daughter loves it and knows all the animals on the puzzle by name after repeating them over and over (and over) :D Only minor issue is the puzzle doesn't come with any instructions telling you how the sensors work. I submitted a review identifying this and Doug and Melissa contacted me to tell me that the puzzle works using LIGHT sensors. So it will NOT work in a dark room. Knowing this would have been helpful from the beginning as I often had a frustrated two year old that was confused why her puzzle wasn't making any sound in a lowly lit room... Great learning product!! Just make sure to put all the pieces back before turning off the lights at night or else it will trigger the puzzle ;)

I bought one of your Farm Sound Puzzles less than 2 weeks ago as a gift for my daughter.  I have to say I'm really disappointed with the quality of this item. Of the 8 sounds, about 3 or 4 of them spontaneously go off. I've walked by the puzzle to have it start meowing or baa-ing at me. Really weird. Then, you have to strategically place each piece in order to hear the sound. I'm not talking about not having it line up with the sensor, but when you put the piece in, no sound is made. If you jiggle the piece a little bit, sometimes it works, but usually it doesn't. However, sometimes you can hover a piece over the sensor and it works--even with the wrong animal. In addition to this, I've changed the batteries twice with no changes.  I know it's a toy, and I've heard nothing but great things about your products. However, I doubt I'll be buying anything Melissa and Doug in the future. This toy is awful, and you should really take a look at your QA/QC.  I'm going to try to return this and get my money back. 

I actually paid a little more for this puzzle from a local store, We loved it at first. But it didn't matter where you put the pieces the animals still made sounds. So It defeated the purpose of learning which animals made that sound. Also when you turn a lamp on light off tv etc. It makes the animal noises.. Got so bad that we ended up just taking the batteries out.. I personally would not recommend.

My daughter LOVES this puzzle. It was given to her as a gift at Christmas. She has spent hours taking the pieces out and putting them back in over and over again just to hear the animal sounds. Great design for little hands. BUT..... it is very frustrating since it rarely works after just a month of ownership. We received it as a gift for Christms, and even when brand new, getting some of the animals to make sounds was impossible using the puzzle pieces. The only way to get them to work was to use your finger on the sensor. Not only that but on the flipside, the puzzle was so sensitive that even turning out the light in a room was enough to trigger the animal sounds. Not the best when you're trying to sneak out of the room after putting a sleeping toddler to bed! Now it will not work for hours at a time only to start working for 5-10 mins, and then stop again. We've swapped out the batteries multiple times, but it did nothing. Seems like the one we got shouldn't have made it through quality control where it was manufactured. Very disappointed in the quality of the product.

I had no idea that my child had started putting shapes, images and sounds together and this was her first puzzle at 14 months old. First time she did it herself. I know that other friends have used this puzzle and liked it. The only problem we have had with it is that the mouse piece is currently missing and everytime we turn off the lights the mouse sound goes off. I moved it to a dark cupboard for storage and we are good again. Well made and very durable.

I have to give this a very bad review because after just two days the puzzle broke. Either the noise that is made is from the wrong animal or no sound sounds at all. I would not recommend this toy.

The best puzzle around. This is my third puzzle bought for my grandchildren. Fun to watch them learn and say the sounds.

Love the puzzle just wish the sounds of some of the animals were more realistic

Generally a fun toy - our 22 month old likes the sounds and placing the animals in their place. From a parent perspective - it needs an off switch. Turning on (or turning off) a light sets off the sounds - not good when you have just put your little one to bed.

Good idea but very poorly executed. Sound sensors seem to be triggered by darkness so go off when anything covers the sensors. Thus, you don't have to put a puzzle piece in its correct spot to hear its corresponding sound (i.e. if the horse puzzle piece is put over the dog spot it will bark). This flaw makes the product useless as a educational toy. Sound sensors also go off when room lights are turned off and will continue to go off randomly until lights are turned back on. Batteries must be removed to prevent this from happening as there is no off/on switch. The sound quality is also very poor.

It looked great in the store, couldnt test it because of course no batteries. My son opened at Christmas, put new batteries in it and it doesnt work like it should. GREAT GIFT i dont think so

My children are 2 1/2 and 12 months, and they both enjoy this puzzle.

My two year old son is going through speech therapy classes and animal sounds is one thing they want us to work on. With this I am able to clean the house while he still works on his sounds.

My mom actually bought this for my son's first birthday and he didn't care much for it until months later, but he is now 3 and still plays with this puzzle on a weekly basis. It is awesome to watch his face light up with the animal sounds!

The electric system of this puzzel is too sensible. Every time we turn on or off a light, the TV or the soud system, the puzzle meow or bark!! A little bit disturbing!

Good puzzle but I found the puzzle makes animal noises sometimes even when the pieces are not being played with or the puzzle is stored. Okay, but a bit unusual to hear animal sounds when you are not expecting it.

My two year old daughter loves sound puzzles and we feel it provides a host of skill building opportunities.
