THE new go-to car seat to fit three across
March 30, 2021
I was extremely fortunate to have received three Graco Slimfit3 LX's through the Stellar Product Panel for the purpose of review.
I drive the 2021 SUV model with three-LATCH bench seat. I already had three car seats installed across- two rear-facing, less expensive models of a luxury brand known for its ability to fit three car seats across, and a forward-facing narrow harnessed booster in the center. I replaced them with the three Slimfit3's; again, rear- facing on the outside and forward-facing in the center.
The first thing I noticed was that they were much lighter than my other car seats. They are also shorter front to back, so if you have a rear-facing car seat, these are better than other seats for behind taller driver or passenger. They also have quick-remove covers, and are made of your typical car seat material. They also have a mesh layer, which allows for better airflow and keeping the kiddos cooler and, in theory, complaining less. Each comes with two cupholders.
They were super easy to install with LATCH. Again, I have three LATCH anchors on my bench seat, so this is definitely a plus. I appreciate the higher forward-facing weight limit of 45 pounds, in comparison to a forty pound limit on my forward-facing harnessed booster. Easy to adjust recline, easy to verify that it's level with the bubble in the blue zone. Place one knee on the seat with body weight and pull on the strap to tighten. Very easy, no sweat involved. There is also a no-rethread harness, which makes for easier adjustments for your kiddos growth. This will also facilitate having to share the car seat with a kid of a different size. The headrest is well padded and easy to adjust together with the harness. With the rear-facing seats on the outside and the forward facing in the center, the seats did not touch each other.
My kids wanted to ensure that I gave a thorough review, so they made sure to spill formula, embed cereal and fruit bars into their seats. I whipped those covers (in sections, so you only have to clean what's soiled!) off, soaked them to remove the encrusted debris, and three then into the washer on gentle, as instructed in the manual. They cleaned up great! But, alas, my son still had doubts and so barfed all over his seat the same day I replaced the covers. Again I soaked and threw his seat covers into the washer. I called Graco right after I dealt with the fabric to see I could clean the car seat itself. Baby Wipes sufficed, since they are gentle, along with rinsing the buckle only with a gentle stream of water, avoiding soaking the webbing. Once I removed the seat covers from the washer, I noticed a tiny bit of vomit still remained asking the piping, so I soaked again and scrubbed this time before throwing into the washer again. Finally clean. And exhausted.
My only gripe so far is that the straps get twisted easily in the buckle tongues. My fournado in the middle seat thinks the harness covers felt too tight, so I did away with them, in accordance with the manual. I can do without the buckle tongue storage. I feel like it's the same amount of time for me to find the buckle tongues as it us to place them in and take them out of the storage loops. Also annoying, but not an actual issue, is that the forward-facing headrest looks super high. My Child Passenger Safety Technician (CPST) said this is typical of Graco car seats when forward-facing and how it's designed.
Overall, I wish these were an option when I needed three new car seats for my new SUV! Much better price than the luxury seats, better air flow, and I think the easy-clean option is a bigger priority than softer luxury fabrics. Especially when potty training is still in our future. These are also highly regarded by the Child Passenger Safety Technicians.
